VSR or B2B split charging for my van?

Essentially there are two methods of recharging your leisure batteries from your vehicle alternator. VSR or B2B  – It is important to choose the right type for your van.

The VSR method (Voltage Sensing Relay)

is suitable for older models of Euro5 engines (usually van models earlier that 2015). These reliable units activate when they sense an increase of voltage coming form the alternator. The are available in power rating from 30-140 amp. and are best suited for charging lead acid batteries.

The B2B method (Battery to battery)

Newer vehicles of the Euro6 variant have alternators that do not generate a charge all of the time. That is to say the van electrics ensures that the alternator only delivers a charge on demand. This is a problem when recharging a leisure battery because the van’s ECU does not recognise the recharging demand of the sepate leisure battery. A B2B charger uses sophisticated electrics that can produce a charging current from the host battery even when the alternator is not engaged. B2B chargers are usually less powerful and are in the 30-60 amp charging range.

VSR charing should not be used on Euro6 engines. As a rule of thumb B2B charge kits should be used on vans that were built after 2016.
